Yea or Nay: Uggs for Men

October 29, 2007 05:14 AM

Last week, I wrote a yea or nay post on The Budget Fashionista regarding my love/hate relationship with Ugg boots. You see, on the women’s side of fashion- they are very “out” and at this point considered nothing more than a pair of overpriced moon boots. Yet, they’re comfortable, easy to wear, and beyond warm- so fashionista’s like myself deal with them.

But what about men and Uggs? Do the same rules apply?

I think so. In fact, I would argue even more so. Much like the dreaded Croc, these shoes should be worn by men in select situations (the only two that coming to mind are- you’re an Australian surfer who needs to keep your feet warm or you’re going to a costume party as a hippie smurf).

Am I being too harsh? Can men wear Uggs? Should men wear Uggs?

I’d have to disagree!  My boyfriend has a pair of UGG causual shoes that have the same fleece on the inside… he loves them.  They are warm and comfortable.  Perhaps men wouldn’t like the “classic ugg boots”, but there are other options from UGG that are still comfortable and fashionable!

Sure they can, but they need to be worn under a bootcut jean (not over like the ladies) and I’d stay away from the light tan ones - dark brown or black.

I did hate them when they first came out but now they are growing on me.

no offense meant to the hippie smurf community…
i honestly thought nothing could look more stupid and ridiculous than a woman in uggs until i saw a man in uggs. it is not fashion, it is vile.

Uggs...has anyone actually BEEN to Norway?  Not even THEY wear those things, except in Oslo.  Didn’t seem them anywhere.  I wore some really cool Raichle black hiking boots with a goretex layer and some insulation.  They look cool, tough as nails, easy to walk in, and I got looks from chicks...plus it made me just a little bit taller than normal which is not a bad thing when you are in the land of tall women.

so i just got some dark brown uggs ... theyre tricky. when i wear them pple tell me to wear them with tight jeans and theyre supposed to go over the jean. it looks femm.or so i think. but theyre really comfortable. any thoughts..

After I bought the Uggs with the heel cut out I received a lot of glances by the chics saying they look extremely comfy and that they want them. I also bought the fall style boot cut Uggs the same day and I wear my jeans over them always over some low rise boot cut Levi’s or khaki pants

Nick,

I also bought some dark brown uggs. I think they go with all jeans really. I sometimes wear them underneath bootcut jeans but a friend suggested I tuck them into the jeans. So I went and bought some skinny jeans and wear them tucked in. They look quite cool too.

well i have one take on this. i’m a guy and i wear Uggs on a regular basis. They’re the best discovery i’ve ever made when it comes to footwear. i wear them out, to work, and around the house. i only shed them on the hottest of summer days and when it rains heavily. Yes, i tuck my pants into them, yes i wear them with shorts and i don’t think they look “gay” or “fem” at all. They go great with everything i wear, especially my chestnut lug-soled Ultras and Classics. It’s been said before, i will wear what i want to, not what’s in. Heck, they say beards are in but i never leave the house unless i’m clean shaven. No caveman look for me. Sorry, fashionistas, no facial hair and Uggs on my feet don’t make me any less of a man.

Don’t get me wrong… I understand and appreciate the comfort factor and just went to an editors preview at Uggs new york showroom (note- next spring they’re updating their moccasins).. but I still don’t like the look of the traditional Ugg on men… A bit too causal and I think it’s because men fashion is so limited that they really only have two ways to wear them (with jeans or with shorts).

No.  Unless you’ve lost a bet and even then it’s a close call.

Yes.  They should “be able to.” They’re designed for both men and women, much like many other types of footwear.  It’s rediculous for people to say someone shouldn’t wear something when they cater to both men and women.  Why would the company make the Classic Ugg boot for men and women if they didn’t intend on both sexes to buy them.  People are so close minded to these types of things.  Women made them popular, so more people think that women can only wear them.  However, they were made for surfers, which, last time I checked, included men as well.  So in the words of this topic, ugh.

We men have slim pickings..so here’s my 2 cents: Brown/black classic UGGS, under the pant leg (for après ski). People tend to sneak a glance. Isn’t that a lot of what fashion is about?  To feel good in what you wear and maybe even get a little attention?  Label me however you want, at least I’m trying something different.

People hate them only because they CAN"T AFFORD THEM!!!

People who want them only buy the Cheap Imitiations!

People who have the REAL UGG are then, COOL!!

I wear Uggs as often as possible and at the last count I had six pairs.  I don’t care what people think about guys wearing Uggs, I love them and I’ll wear whatever I want whenever I want.  They are so cool.  My wife likes me to wear them… She has a few pairs as well.

I do not care what anyone says, it is alright for men to wear UGGs as they were made for both men and women. My wife has several pairs and I have at least six pairs of the Classic Tall in black, grey, chestnut and brown. I wear them under jeans and with the jeans tucked in. They are warm in the winter and extremely comfortable.  Yes, it is fine for men to wear them and those who hate them do so either because they cannot afford them, which is understandable or because they are too cheap to buy them.
