Yea or Nay: Back Pocket Embellishment

August 25, 2008 04:00 PM

This month, Esquire magazine makes the case for "the unadorned back pocket," claiming that it's "an elegant thing. It’s a symbol of restraint, dignity, masculinity. In this age of embellishment, it’s a quiet protest." We, of course, have noticed the long life of the back pocket embellishment trend, the detail of which often seems to multiply in direct proportion to the price tag -- some of those high-end jeans makers sure seem to love their fancy swirly lines and logos on the back pocket (like this truly puzzling pair from Armani Exchange). We're kind of with Esquire on this one -- the less fuss back there, the better, because, well, we're guys. But what's your take? Is back pocket embellishment a denim style Yea or Nay?

I think it’s time to ditch the gaudy back pocket embellishment. Subtle stitching is fine but we should start dressing with a little more class, even with apparel as casual as jeans.
