Let's face it -- the bow tie (outside of formalwear, of course) is as prep school, natty, upper crust-ish as it gets. See Jack Shop recently featured a Lova bow tie as a "worthy splurge," but it doesn't have to be pricey either. You see it around on certain celebrities (like Kanye West) who have a cool quotient high enough to carry off just about whatever they want, but for the everyday guy? We actually still kinda like it. The Upgrader suggests that the knit cap is one of the essential style elements this fall, and while we hadn't yet pegged this as a major fall trend (though we might be a bit slow on the stick, as we are currently still holding on to our summer fedora, reluctant to let the season pass) they might be right. Just the name almost makes it a nay by default -- the puffer jacket? Hmmm. However, we wrote about the puffer jacket trend last winter, and by the looks of some of the offerings for this fall it's back (including some ridiculously high end versions like this Vince Zip Off Hooded Puffer Jacket, $495 at Saks Fifth Avenue) Sure it's warm, and being the practical sorts we give it definite points for functionality. There's something about a turtleneck that makes us uncomfortable -- both physically (they're a bit constricting) and aesthetically (are they to feminine? do they make us look like we're 8 years old?). This fall, we're seeing some cropping up, however, and we're not quite sure what to think. Men.Style.com has named the "new labor" as a major fall trend for guys -- meaning rugged workboots, rolled up sleeves, and dungarees abound. This month's GQ, under "Amp Up Your Style," has a short how-to piece making cutoffs -- taking a $145 pair of DKNY chinos to do the job. Obviously, we would not likely pay $145 for a pair of chinos to begin with, and if we did, would certainly not be making them into cutoffs, but we digress . . . Adidas is usually a "yea" for us -- especially if we got a great deal on 'em -- and we dig Star Wars as much as the next guy (c'mon, you know you're still jonseing after those action figures your mom gave away).
