Yea or Nay: Fur Coats For Men

Yea or Nay: Fur Coats For Men

On, TBF we’ve been having this raging debate on the fashion, ethical, political, and financial issues surrounding fur coats. While I’m on the fence when it comes to women, I’m squarely on the side of fur as a “no-no” for men.

Why?

Well, a fluffy fur coat tends to add additional bulk- which isn’t so bad if you’re Tom Cruise, but not so great if your Ving Rhames.  Then there’s the ethical/political issues that come with a man wearing a fur coat, since most women under 35 inherit their coats from a relative (thus, not “killing” an animal) and few men inherit a fur coat from gramps.  Plus a man in a fabulous fur coat draw the type of attention that can raise the eyebrows of others (just ask American Gangster’s Frank Lucas or your local pimp).

So what do you think? Yeah or Nay : Fur Coats for Men

Fur coats ONLY look good on the animals who grew them.

The people who wear animal furs these days–man or woman– are either ignorant or callous, and surely that’s not the image they’re after. For those who really don’t know: foxes, mink, rabbits, nutria, chinchillas are either intensively confined on fur farms in miserable cages, only to be electrocuted, gassed, or have their throats slit and their fur is ripped off their bodies. Coyotes, foxes, lynx and beavers are trapped in excruciating steeljaw leghold traps; baby harp seals are bludgeoned to death in front of their mothers. Because most fur (including fur trim on hoods)comes from China, where there are no regulations or animal welfare protections, the animals fare even worse. Undercover video shows animals being stomped and bashed and skinned while they’re still alive and conscious. Hideous. (Go to http://www.idausa.org to see the video, tough guys.)

OK, so now you know, so you can’t claim ignorance. So who wants to be the kind of person who doesn’t care?

That’s a big Nay on men or women wearing fur coats.

Unless you live in the arctic, male + fur coat = pimp.

  • Hooper says:

Yes, but if, and only if, you are so tough that you can kick the ### of anyone who laughs at you.

  • As I stated in TBF, we really shouldn’t be wearing leather either- slaughterhouses aren’t the most humane places on earth AND the impact of grazing on our environment is a major, major environmental issue. (read pretty much anything on the environment and you’ll see how the destruction of rain forests effect everything including many of the animals you mentioned above). Also chickens receive similar treatment as you described above for chinchillas.

So, I understand and get that there are other options than fur and I think for most we receive our furs as family heirlooms and/or purchase vintage. However, few men inherit a fur, so they would actually have to go out and purchase one.

  • Hooper says:

Pfft!  Fashion is all about not caring what other people think – have you seen what comes down some of those runways?

  • John says:

Why not?  Women do, and I regard a fur as neither a gender statement, nor a fashion statement.  It’s a financial statement.  So long as it isn’t tacky like the blue fur coat above, I think men should wear fur.  The only reason why I haven’t worn fur for a long time is because it hasn’t been cold enough.  Otherwise…I have a sable coat, and Arctic fox coat and a silver fox jacket in storage.

  • ikr says:

Absolutely. I love fur and do wear it. I have a very large collection of vintage fur coats.

  • Giovanni says:

I really have a hard time understanding this whole issue.  Today, I was at the store, and the gentleman told me to just try on this fur coat.  At first, I was reluctant.  I’ve never owned fur before.  (Not for ethical reasons, but just because it never crossed my mind) I said what the hell.  I’ll try it on.  I did, and it felt amazing, and it didn’t look half bad.  I bought it, and then since I don’t see many men wearing fur, I googled it to see if I found anything.  Now the ethical arguments are very well noted, but aside from that, I’m finding a lot of people saying that men shouldn’t wear fur, and that it looks bad and so on and so forth.  That is all a matter of taste, but what surprises me is that there is a forum simply dedicated to discuss whether men should wear fur or not.  I don’t bother people when they dress up looking like fools, and definitely don’t start a web forum about it.  That’s my 2 cents.  So on that note.  Goodbye.
