The Dreaded Act of Shaving

June 5, 2008 07:00 PM

All men hate shaving to varying degrees. Some grow beards in protest, while others simply suck it up and do the deed when necessary. If you subscribe to the latter, grab your razor of choice, pop in a fresh blade, and get ready to be surprised by what is quite possibly the perfect shave setup.

First up: the face wash. Neutrogena for Men’s Razor Defense Face Scrub ($5.99) has the little granules that gently scrub off whatever dead skin cells, dirt, or oil you’ve accumulated, without feeling like you’re sanding your face off. After rinsing that off, it’s time to start shaving.

Start with Lucky Tiger’s Liquid Cream Shave ($18.50). It is an extremely slick shaving cream that, instead of lathering up thickly like a traditional cream or gel, leaves a thin, white film that helps your razor glide effortlessly through your beard—and it smells a little like orange oil, which is a nice bonus.

And then there’s the aftershave. Creams and lotions have a tendency to make the cleanly shaven face feel sticky or “sweaty,? and while the feeling of a traditional, “splash on? aftershave is much nicer than that of a cream or lotion, most smell cheap and dry out the face. A happy medium, then, is Baxter of California’s After Shave Balm ($15.00). It has a minty scent and cooling effect (thanks to the menthol it contains), has the consistency and moisturizing properties of a lotion, and will leave your face feeling clean and fresh like your favorite aftershave always did.
