Sure it seems superficial — I mean, who cares what your gym bag looks like? It’s a place for sweaty socks and your iPod — nothing more and nothing less, right? Perhaps, but think how much cooler you’d look if you weren’t carrying that faded, stained, ripped up bag you got back in college. You might even bother to go to the gym once in a while.

Don’t know what to look for? Forget the mesh, team logos, and neon colors. Instead, look for subdued hues, durable nylon, or even a smart leather or leather look bag. You’ll want at least a couple of pockets, but skip the bags with a pocket at every turn — the look is probably too young for you (sorry), and you’ll just lose your stuff in there anyway.

Some grown-up gym bags we like, for less:

Nike Brasilia IV XS Duffle, on sale, $16, eBags

APC Leather Duffle/Sports Bag, $46.99, Overstock.com

OGIO Gymbo, on sale $25.19, eBags

REI Cargo Gym Bag, $49.50, REI
