 Style 101: The Sweater

The arrival of colder weather means bulking up—and we don’t mean packing on the pounds from all those holiday celebrations. Your wardrobe will need some extra insulation, and that means sweaters. If last year’s are too threadbare to survive another season, here are some suggestions on what to look for in stores now:

Chunky Knits. Think Grandma’s knitting style—thick and a little roomy—and you’ve got the right idea. These are for guys who like some extra space. Heavy knits will keep you warm, and potentially hide a couple of those aforementioned pounds, should they show up. This one, by Nautica at Amazon.com, is $59.99.

Button Up, or Down. Cardigans have been on the comeback trail for some time (read more on that here), and they continue to keep a high profile this winter. You have your choice of chunky knits (see above) or leaner looks, depending both on your physique and the climate outside your window. This striped version from Gap fits the lean bill, on sale now for just $19.99.

Pattern and Texture. Current sweater choices are far from boring, which is good news if the rest of your wardrobe consists of jeans, khakis, and solid button down shirts. Branch out with something tweedy, or some bold color blocks. Argyle seems to be making the rounds as well, like on this v-neck pullover from Old Navy, $29.50.

Cashmere. Budget cashmere is everywhere right now, so you might as well take advantage of it. Make it even more budget friendly by picking it up in the form of a vest, like this one from Macy’s, for $69.99.
