Things Every Grown Man Should Know: How to Get Dressed in the Morning

As you work on building your wardrobe, there’s one set of rules you need to master- the art of dressing in the morning. Before entering the world of men’s fashion, dressing was easy: Throw on the pants you wore yesterday, grab the shirt with the least amount of stains, throw on a pair of clean (?) socks, and a pair of much abused kicks.

However, there’s a lot more you need to do to look your best in the morning. Here are a few tips:

Step 1. Make a list of everything you do to get ready. EVERYTHING. No matter how small. Write down even routine task like brushing your teeth, ironing and checking the weather. Even note if your significant other wakes up before, after or in the middle of your morning routine. You have to factor in the morning prattle.

Step 2. Split the list in two. One list of the things that have to be done in the morning, like combing your hair. On the second list should be all the things that can be handled before going to bed, like ironing, making sure everything you need at work or school is in one place and listing your goals for the following day.

Step 3. Put both list where you can see them. If you have a corkboard or whiteboard around put it up or use your smart phone with a to-do list application for easy viewing.

Step 4. Follow the list for a few days and make adjustments accordingly, shrinking the list down to a few touchpoints. Maybe you don’t have remind yourself to choose matching socks.

Step 5. Be the star of the office because you are there on time and looking good.

If this sounds a little OCD, well, it probably is, but consider this: There was a more than 30% reduction in post surgery death and complications was the introduction of a simple check list. Things like, “wash hands” was on the list. Sound simplistic and obvious for a person about to cut open another person to wash their hands, but in the pre-surgury rush, things are overlooked. Just like they can be in the morning.
