Designers Get Inspired by Mad Men
What: Mad Men isn’t just a TV show anymore. It’s quickly becoming a part of American pop culture. It’s a trend that doesn’t look like it’s slowing down, especially now that multiple designers say they are creating Mad Men-inspired fashion collections. Brooks Brothers has released a limited-edition collection of grey sharkskin suits, just like the kind Don Draper wears on the show. Meanwhile, the costume designer Janie Bryant says she’s planning to design men’s accessories and additional office wear for a Mad Men line in the near future.
What They Say:
“For Americans, it was our Camelot era, with John F Kennedy and Jackie O,” says Mad Men costume designer Janie Bryant. “There’s a real nostalgia for all that; although, for the younger generation, it’s all fresh and new.”
What We Say: Mad Men is one of our favorite shows on television, and who wouldn’t want to look like Don Draper? The only challenge for designers—as we see it—will be to design 1960s-inspired clothes that still look fashion forward for today’s aesthetic. After all, nobody wants to look like they are wearing an actual Mad Men costume to the office.
