We’ve seen lots of marketing angles, but this one takes the proverbial cake: Karmaloop, a retailer of urban-style clothing, purports to have been “raided��? by Crooks & Castles— click the link, and you’ll find that the “Crooks & Castles” logo and tagline have “taken over��? the page. “Resistance was futile��? we’re told – “everyone knows you can’t stop the Crooks.��? If that wasn’t all weird enough, the ransom note on the site tells us that the staff is being held hostage, and we must buy merchandise to free them. I don’t know about you, but I’m thinking they could just stay put for awhile.
Perhaps if Karmaloop is looking for street cred, fashion cred, or both, it would be a great idea to abandon silly publicity strategies like this one.
Yes, we noticed. But nope, we definitely don’t want to shop there.
